Our Story

Wreck Pond Watershed

Wreck Pond Watershed Association originally started as a group called Wreck Pond Preservation Association and began with local residents whose aim was to protect Wreck Pond and the surrounding area. The group of supporters grew and as time went on the mission of the group included areas from Spring Lake and Sea Girt to Spring Lake Heights and Wall Township.

Land preservation became a major focus in the 1990's when a 5 story 145 unit assisted living facility was proposed on the Jimmy Byrnes site. After a five year battle, the group, along with the help of local municipalities, saved the property and it is now part of the Green Acres inventory.

Volunteers manage many aspects of the of the Wreck Pond Watershed including a large Purple Martin colony, greenway preservation and restoration, flood management, wildlife protection, habitat enhancement and public outreach. Our watershed begins with headwaters out on Route 34 and ends at the Atlantic Ocean. One of the priorities of Wreck Pond Watershed Association is clean water....and a clean ocean. Our members are supporters and volunteers for our larger sister organizations which play a ket role in the future of the Atlantic Ocean. We support Clean Ocean Action, the American Littoral Society, the NY/NJ Baykeeper and New Jersey Audubon.

We are proud to be a part of a large network of organizations that work day in and day out to improve the quality of our lives through the environment.
