Endangered Beach Nesting Birds
Each year the beaches at the Jersey Shore become home to many beach nesting birds.
Piping Plovers, Least Terns, Black Skimmers and American Oystercatchers can be found on several Jersey Shore beaches from Cape May to Sandy Hook.
Piping Plovers, Least Terns and Oystercatchers can be found at several of our sites in Sea Girt, Spring Lake and Belmar. Volunteer monitors are trained to patrol the nesting sites from early spring through August. Monitors help with nesting information and gather data for Conserve Wildlife of New Jersey. Monitors also play a crucial role in the success of the sites by educating the public about beach nesting birds.
There are no special requirements to volunteer. Binoculars are a must in order to monitor the activity of birds and their young. Trainings are conducted on-site and volunteers decide their own hours. Our program also monitors the sites during Fourth of July weekend to insure that personal fireworks and crowds do not impact nesting sites.
